Gr 1-6‘Inspector Gadget, of cartoon fame, voiced by Don Adams, introduces children to Italy and Egypt. Each tape contains two episodes, concentrating on different aspects of the same location. Italy includes segments on Venice, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and Galileo. Inspector Gadget also visits Pompeii and Herculaneum, and discusses the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Because it is the focus of a separate video, Rome is not included. Egyptian historical sites, as well as the important role of the Nile River, are the focus of Egypt. Gadget travels to the Valley of the Kings, the Great Pyramid, and Cairo where he visits the Egyptian Antiquities Museum. Hieroglyphs, papyrus, and prominent rulers such as Ramses II, Cleopatra, and King Tut are briefly profiled. Humorous yet informative banter is voiced over live-action video, with occasional appearances by the animated. guide. While too short to give in-depth information, these videos do provide a child-friendly overview that would be a good launching point for additional research.‘Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA (c) Copyright 2010.
