Curly Girl coauthors Massey and Bender take up the banner for silver sirens of all ages with this guide. The book covers a lot of ground, weaving in stories of women who chose to let the silver show or dye their hair silver for effect. Some famous people (and one young man) are included-Stacy London, Jamie Lee Curtis, Pink, Hilary Duff-but the ordinary women's hair journeys, documented with photos, are the real draw. Independent stylist and curly girl Massey punnishly provides guidance and encouragement, especially for those who want to stop the expensive and time-consuming dyeing process and embrace their silverness. She urges hair stylists to work with their clients rather than lament losing color customers. Ways they can help include highlights and lowlights, toner applications, short-short haircuts, or even dyeing hair faux-silver until natural colors come through. The last part of the book has silver hair care recipes, tips for matching makeup and accessories to your new look, and product recommendations and cautions (silicone, parabens, and shampoos with sulfates are no-nos). VERDICT Inspirational and supportive for those who want to quit the dye, go natural, or try on silver; a good companion to Anne Kreamer's more personal account, Going Gray.-Liz French, Library Journal © Copyright 2018.
