A courtship on Huckleberry Hill Cover Image Book Book

A courtship on Huckleberry Hill / Jennifer Beckstrand.

Summary:

There's nothing Huckleberry Hill, Wisconsin's irrepressible eighty-somethings Anna and Felty Helmuth like better than a challenge. And the chance to matchmake their feisty granddaughter is their most delightful task yet... Elsie Helmuth's plain-spoken ways got her in trouble once before, so she needs to make a good impression at her new teaching job in Huckleberry Hill. But she's not about to let disabled student Wally Sensenig work below his potential. And she definitely won't put up with his hot-headed older brother sabotaging her efforts, no matter how handsome he is... Sam is nearly at the end of his rope caring for his ailing, widowed mother, working their farm, and raising his siblings. He'll admit Elsie's ideas are bringing Wally out of his angry shell - but why does she have to be as stubborn as she is pretty? Yet as it turns out, Elsie has taught Sam something about himself as well. And he'll do whatever it takes to make up for his mistakes - and win her heart forever. -- back cover.

How dare she! That's the first thing that crosses Sam's mind when his younger brother Wally informs Sam that Elsie, the town's new schoolteacher, has been treating Wally badly. Ever since the accident that cost Wally one of his legs, he has had a difficult time adapting. So Elsie should be bending over backward to make things easier for Wally at school. However, once Sam actually meets Elsie, he discovers Wally hasn't exactly been telling him the truth about the new teacher, who turns out to be a caring instructor who believes Wally has been using his disability to get away with too much for too long. Although some readers might find the manner in which a disabled character is referenced in the latest addition to Beckstrand's long-running and popular inspirational Amish series, the Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill, a bit jarring, there is no denying the sensitivity and grace Beckstrand uses when dramatizing the challenges living with a disability presents, not only to those who are dealing with it themselves but also to family members and friends.--Charles, John Copyright 2017 Booklist
