Capitalizing on that trend while contemporizing an old art form, editor Denegre selects two dozen samples of quilting for the home, complete with instructions and elegant color photographs and charts. The riffs on traditional patterns will delight, such as when a log cabin transforms into a show-stopping table runner, four colorful letters M-A-K-E stand out on a white-background mini-quilt, and the somewhat complicated Drunkard Path's design is translated into two very difficult quilts. Though patterns do not indicate level of difficulty, most novices who are comfortable with a sewing machine will be able to complete at least one of the projects. In fact, Denegre ensures success by incorporating about 10 techniques upfront that are intended to save time, from cutting half-square triangle blocks to French fold binding. Tips are scattered throughout on how to, for instance, customize a project and enable smooth cutting and sewing. What's old can always be renewed.
